Bringing light into a dark apartment
Three changes that cost less than removing a wall.
A dark apartment doesn't always need new windows. Often the light is already there, but it stops at the first room it reaches.
Glass doors
A frosted glass door between the living room and the hallway lets light through while keeping the rooms separate. It is the first change we suggest, because it costs little and can be done in a day.
Light colours where daylight enters from the side
The wall opposite the window works like a mirror: a warm white there does more than any lamp.
A transom window
Where the wall is not load-bearing, a high opening above the door brings light into the hallway and leaves the walls available for furniture.
